Ballynure
has a rich and colourful
history extending back
beyond the Plantation of
Ulster. It was the first
parish of Jonathan Swift
while in the
Presbyterian Church a
wake was held for
William Orr in events
which led to the Battle
of Antrim in 1798.
Cotton manufacture was
ended by the American
Civil War but local
weavers were also poets.
The families of Sam
Houston General Macomb
and Mark Twain came from
the area.
Ernie
Scott grew up here and
has compiled a social
history, drawing on his
knowledge of our Ulster
Scots heritage as well
as personal memories to
produce a unique account
of life in Ballynure
over four centuries. It
is illustrated with many
archive photographs as
well as some of the
village
today.
The
book sold over 500
copies in a week and a
second printing also
sold out quickly so a
third was needed to meet
the demand.
