The
dam originally covered six acres and in
the early nineteenth century a mill race
drove a 20' water wheel. Later a thousand
feet long tunnel was constructed to turn a
sixty feet metal wheel.
In the
twentieth century the dam provided water
for the boilers and the wet spinning
process.
The new
boardwalk provides access to a nature
conservation area with swans and
ducks.
The 158
feet high chimney has been retained as a
landmark which can be seen from much of
the Borough of Newtownabbey.
