I
am going to look at how different life is now
compared to how it was in the 1960s.
I have talked
to my Mum and my Nanny and my Great-granny and
asked them to tell me all about how things have
changed. I am going to describe the way of life
through the eyes of a little girl called Sarah
growing up in the 1960s and compare it to how I see
things today.
Holidays
Sarah I am
seven years old and I am so excited because today I
am going on holiday. I am going to Groomsport with
my family for a whole month. We go there every year
and stay in a little bungalow beside my Nanny.
Groomsport seems so far away and I can't wait to
get there. The bungalow has only two bedrooms and
in the kids room there are two big bunk beds which
we all share. There is no running water and we have
to take turns to get water from the pump out in the
field. We go to the beach everyday and have a swim.
Sometimes on the way back we pick berries from the
hedge and eat them. As a special treat we sometimes
get a bus into Bangor and go for an ice-cream. At
night we sit by the fire and play monopoly or have
a sing song.
Rebecca
Today I am so excited because we are going to
Florida on holiday. I have never been there before.
We are going to be on the aeroplane for nine hours.
We are going to stay in a private villa with its
own swimming pool. We are hiring a car and will
travel around and see all the sights. I can't wait
to go to Disney World.
Shopping
Sarah Me
and my Mum go to the shops most days. We usually
have to walk as Dad takes the car to work. We go to
the butchers and the greengrocers to buy food for
the dinner. We get our milk delivered every moning
by the milkman. The bread van also comes round and
delivers our bread. As a treat on Fridays the
lemonade man delivers a couple of bottles of
lemonade. Our comics are also delivered on Friday.
I get Twinkle and my brother gets the Beano. The
shops close at five o'clock every day except on
Wednesday when they close at lunch time. There are
no shops open on Sunday.
Rebecca Me
and my Mum go shopping once a week. We go to Tesco
where we can buy all the food we need in one shop.
We buy milk and bread here too. If we need more
during the week we will get it at the garage. We
buy lots of food. Some is frozen and some is
ready-made meals that are quick and easy to cook.
We always get biscuits and crisps and nice
treats.
Communications
Sarah
Tonight we are going to make a tape to send to my
aunt in America to let her hear all our news. It is
very expensive to talk on the phone. I also write
to my cousins in America and it is exciting getting
letters back.
Rebecca
We got a new computer at Christmas. It is really
great. I can scan photos in and send them to all my
friends and family. It is so fast and I can e-mail
to anywhere in the world. Using the telephone has
become much cheaper so I am able to ring my Aunt in
America from time to time. I can't wait until I am
older and get a mobile phone like my
brother.
