In 1798 Presbyterian farmers and businessmen from Ballyclare, Ballynure, Doagh and the surrounding area joined the United Irishmen. It was their aim

"To unite the whole people of Ireland. to abolish the memory of past dissensions and to substitute the common name of Irishmen in place of the denominations of Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter"
